Routine visits with a health care provider can help prevent illness and can find problems that may need treatment. A well women exam is an important cancer screening and a comprehensive gynecological exam which includes a pap smear, a pelvic exam, a breast exam, a consultation with a clinician about birth control options and a referral to additional health services if needed. Women who have not had a pap in three years, or who have a history of abnormal pap results are especially high risk. Women 21 and younger who do not have a history of abnormal pap results do not need a well woman exam.
Planned Parenthood can provide women who do not need a full well woman exam with a HOPE (Hormonal Option Without Pelvic Exam) exam. The HOPE exam includes a consultation with a clinician, prescription for birth control, and referral to additional health services if needed.
