LAM (Lactational Amenorrhea Method)
LAM is continuous breastfeeding that can postpone ovulation. It stimulates the hormone prolactin, which is necessary for milk production, and it inhibits the release of another hormone, gonadotrophin, necessary for ovulation — the release of an egg from an ovary.
How LAM Works
Pregnancy cannot happen if an egg is not released.
How Well LAM Works
Of 100 women who use LAM, two will become pregnant in the first six months with typical use. Fewer than one will become pregnant with perfect use.
LAM cannot reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections. Latex or female condoms can.
How LAM Is Used
Breastfeeding as birth control can be effective for six months after delivery only if a woman
- does not rely on the method after six months
- does not substitute other foods for a breastmilk meal
- feeds her baby at least six times a day on both breasts
- feeds her baby “on demand” at least every four hours during the day
- has not had a period since she delivered her baby
- provides nighttime breastfeedings at least every six hours — does not let her baby sleep through the night
Advantages of LAM
Breastfeeding has many health advantages for the baby. It
- decreases the likelihood of infection from germs in water, other milk, or formula
- increases body contact and enhances comfort for the child and bonding between mother and child
- passes on some of the mother’s antibodies to protect the baby from certain bacteria and viruses
- protects against the development of allergies and may protect against the development of asthma
- provides the best nutrition
LAM also has advantages for mothers:
- does not affect a woman’s natural hormone balance
- immediately effective
- inexpensive
- no prescription necessary
- nothing needs to be put in place before vaginal intercourse
- reduces bleeding after delivery
- requires no supplies or medical supervision. Women may initially benefit from consulting with a lactation expert, and they should be assisted as soon as possible if problems arise so that lactation is not disrupted.
Who Can Use LAM
Most women can use LAM.
Possible Disadvantages of LAM
- Breastfeeding may diminish the erotic significance of the breast.
- Breastfeeding may diminish vaginal lubrication.
- It can be difficult to exclusively breastfeed.
- LAM can be relied on for only six months.
